Every February Endurance Life host a mix of trail running events in Polzeath. I did the 10k event for this event (There are also half-marathon, marathon and ultra options)—Each of which tests your mettle against the rugged Cornish coast. Known for its stunning landscapes and unpredictable weather, Polzeath didn’t disappoint. The early morning air was crisp, the sky a dramatic tapestry of greys, and the anticipation among the runners palpable.
I was fortunate to share this experience with an inspiring group of ladies from This Women Trail Runs group. I met these incredible women at an event years ago, and since then, we have continued to participate in trail events together each year. The camaraderie and support are always incredible, adding an extra layer of motivation as we gear up for the race.
The race began with a burst of energy, our feet pounding against the uneven terrain. The course, winding through coastal paths and challenging inclines, offered breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean crashing against the cliffs below. Every twist and turn brought a new challenge, from slippery rocks to steep ascents, but the beauty of the surroundings made every gruelling step worth it.
As I crossed the finish line, a mix of exhaustion and exhilaration washed over me. The sense of achievement was heightened by the camaraderie of fellow runners, each of us sharing stories of our battles with the elements. That evening, with sore muscles and a heart full of memories, we returned to our house where a hot tub awaited us. Soaking in the warm water, we laughed and reminisced about the day, our aches melting away in the soothing bubbles.
The following morning, recovery took a unique turn as we headed down to the beach for a Sauna by The Sea experience. Nestled right by the shore, the wooden sauna cabin was a stark yet inviting contrast to the chilly winds whipping off the sea. Inside, the heat enveloped us, soothing our tired muscles and rejuvenating our spirits.
As the steam rose, we gazed out through the cabin’s window and noticed two curious seals bobbing in the waves, seemingly intrigued by the unusual human activity. Their dark eyes and graceful movements added a magical touch to the experience, a reminder of the wild beauty that defines this part of the world.
Emerging from the sauna, the cold air hit us like a wave, invigorating and refreshing. We stood at the water’s edge, breathing deeply, feeling a profound connection to nature and a sense of peace that only comes from pushing your limits and then finding stillness. Each time we ventured into the water, the seals reappeared, their presence becoming a delightful part of our seaside routine.
The Polzeath 10k Endurance Life event was more than just a race; it was a celebration of resilience, community, and the awe-inspiring power of nature. And as I reflect on those two days, the memory of running against the elements, soaking in the hot tub with my friends, and relaxing in a seaside sauna under the watchful eyes of two curious seals will always bring a smile to my face. Sharing this journey with the amazing women from This Women Runs Trails group made it all the more special.
